If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, you may be both disappointed and surprised at the lack of conventional treatment options offered to you by your own doctor. Many will recommend that you do nothing at all, and simply monitor the situation, seeking further advice should your symptoms worsen. This is largely due to the fact that conventional treatment has severe limitations and cannot offer a permanent solution.

One common factor in fibroid growth is the hormone estrogen. It is well known that although this doesn't in itself cause fibroid growth, it can contribute to it and can help fuel the growth of fibroids. As estrogen is naturally manufactured by and stored in fat cells, it makes sense to control your weight as staying a healthy weight can ensure that the amount of estrogen is not elevated. Fibroids are caused by a combination of factors which subtly interact within a woman's body, thus causing fibroid growth. It is difficult for a doctor to determine the precise cause of fibroid growth in an individual as the circumstances may be slightly different in each one and the factors applicable in one case are unlikely to be exactly the same in another.

It is impossible to pinpoint the exact cause of fibroids in individual women and this is one of the reasons why conventional treatments cannot provide a permanent cure. Various factors affect women in different ways-for example, although it is known that excess estrogen and excess weight can both contribute to fibroid formation, not all women with either or both of these conditions will have fibroids.

It would be much simpler to treat fibroids if the cause of fibroids could be pin pointed with certainty. However despite extensive research, cause of fibroids continues to remain a mystery. The only known probable cause of fibroids in the uterus is excess estrogen in the body. Hence all methods to shrink fibroids lay a lot of emphasis on correcting estrogen dominance.

Now this was all very well, but being in my mid thirties, I had a long stretch ahead of me and wasn't prepared to live such a limited life. Indeed, it felt like a life sentence! I strongly felt I should not have to put up with it so spoke further to my doctor about what could be done. One thing I was sure of was that I didn't want a hysterectomy...for lots of reasons! We discussed the other surgical options-I could have groups of fibroids surgically removed, or have a procedure whereby the blood supply to the fibroids was cut off, allowing them to wither and die.
